Life's Lesson - "The Garbage Truck" theory

Recently the garbage truck has been hovering around Gretchen. Let's just say this, that when I received this creative analogy below via an email, I knew that I needed to share this with the blog land, so that others could benefit from it as I have. It is quite insightful and my hope and prayer is that if just one of you readers of my blog can learn from this, than it is well worth the time it took to share it. I am not normally one that shares this type of blog posts, but thought this was superb thus I'm taking the risk. Maybe, you've been dumped on, or maybe you are the dumper and can also learn from this little story.

The Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!'

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you.

Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.
Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.
The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so....
Love the people who treat you right.
Pray for the ones who don't.
Life is ten percent what you make it... and ninety percent how you take it!

Have a blessed, garbage-free day!

  2. So sorry you've had that nasty garbage hanging around you Gretchen, but remember that in a way it is a good thing as it lets you be a positive influence in people's lives. I learned that lesson one day when a man yelled at me in a parking lot for touching his car with my door. Rather than be nasty back to him I apologized and asked him if he was having a bad day. He said that as a matter of fact he was and then went on to list a whole lot of terrible things that were going on in his life. Anyways, at the end of the conversation he thanked me for being so understanding and said he felt a lot better (despite the little paint chip...just kidding). Anyways, I always remember this story when people are nasty to me and I try doubly hard to be nice to them.
You are such a kind, warm-hearted person and there is a reason for that!! Thinking of you.
